Jimmy Lowe is the CPRT's second US OPEN champion as he defeated Woody Clouse in four games. After losing game one 5-9, Lowe went on a tear to dominate Clouse 9-3, 9-3, and 9-0 in the final game. Lowe will go into the next CPRT event in Concord, CA (January) as the CPRT top ranked player.
Saturday Action
Two rounds on Saturday set-up a US OPEN final of third seed Woody Clouse and fourth seed Jimmy Lowe. Clouse had the tougher route to Sunday's final as he had to beat not only Doug Ganim but second seed Ruben Gonzalez and accomplished both in surprising straight games. Lowe first faced last year's semi-finalist Keith Minor, a straight game win, then the always tough Tom Travers who won the first game before going out in four games.
Friday Action
Top seed Cliff Swain was forced to withdraw from his round of 16 match due to injury allowing Randy Forrest to advance into the quarterfinals. Forrest will face eighth seed Tom Travers who survived a battle with close friend & travel partner Steve Wattz. The top half was filled out by the fourth & fifth seeds Jimmy Lowe and Keith Minor who both advanced in straight games. There was one battle and upset in the bottom half of the draw as US OPEN Tournament Director Doug Ganim avenged last year's loss to Brad McCunniff while Dave Sable knocked out Egan Inoue in three straight. The second & third seeds, Ruben Gonzalez and Woody Clouse both cruised easliy to fill out the quarterfinals.
Thursday Action
Thursday's matches set-up the round of 16 and the top 8 seeds learned who would come after them looking for the CPRT US OPEN title. The best match on Thursday saw Darjon Bittner survive a second consecutive five game match, this time over Roland Grassl to earn the match against third seed Woody Clouse. Randy Forrest, Steve Wattz, Richard Eisenmann, and Mike Grisz all advanced in four games while Eugene Coyle, Doug Ganim, and Egan Inoue all cruised in straight games. These guys all get their shots at the top seeds on Friday.
Wednesday Action
Play started Wednesday at the US OPEN with eight opening matches highlighted by the return to pro racquetball of the legendary Hawaiian Egan Inoue. Inoue was pushed to five games by John Ivers and will face Ted Pittinaro on Thursday. Two other matches went to the wire as Darjon Bittner and Mike Grisz advanced in tiebreakers. The other winners on Wednesday were Philip Lane, Rod Van Dyke, Japan's Sadao Funatani, Ira Holland, and Vinnie Ganley. Most of the top amateurs in the draw will open play on Thursday as action begins to heat up.

Which of the top amateurs have the best shot at the CPRT pros? Jimmy Lowe? Keith Minor? Brad McCunniff? Tom Travers?
Ruben Thrown To The Dogs After Illinois Vest-a-Dog Racquetball Fundraiser

Ruben participated in the recent Illinois Vest-a-Dog Racquetball Fundraiser, held Oct 3-5 at the Norris Rec Center in St. Charles, IL, He was an outstanding representative for Ektelon, and for the sport of racquetball. Ruben came in to do a 1 day clinic with a few lucky players the Wednesday prior to the tournament.
There were several highlights of the weekend provided by Ruben and Ektelon:
A friendly exhibition between Ruben and Keith Minor. There were many tournament “newbies” and a few “casual” racquetball fans who were treated to a great 3 game match and witnessed high level racquetball for the first time!
The raffle of a RG model Ektelon racquet, personalized by Ruben on the spot! Thanks to the generosity of Ektelon, an additional $240 was raised for the cause of Illinois Vest-a-Dog!
Finally the real highlight, Ruben participating in the K9 attack dog demonstration (picture above!).
